Program

The Crete Writing Workshop combines writing workshops with lectures and discussions of the food, culture and the environment of the Mediterranean. The daily writing workshops are designed to build confidence by identifying the strengths in the writer’s work. The workshops employ a practical approach. Lou Ureneck, writing workshop leader, encourages writers to see writing as a creative process that often occurs in discernible steps that can be mastered through practice. Working with this process approach, workshop faculty encourages students to take down the barriers to writing and write freely and toward discovery. Among the writing tools and techniques that students will discuss and apply in the workshops are focus, exploring structure, drafting and revision. The workshop goals are development of the writer’s voice and production of publishable work. Participants are free to choose their writing topics, or they may bring writing projects that already are underway. The program’s daily excursions will offer unique experiences of the indigenous nature and culture of Crete to inspire the creative spirit of the participants.
